Addition Within 20: Activities and Games for Grade 1 Kids
Adding within 20 is the big hurdle in first grade. Most kids handle addition to 10 fine — then stall at 8+5 or 9+6. Here's why and how to fix it.
Why addition within 20 is harder than within 10
When adding within 10, children work in a single "layer" of numbers. But 8+5=13 requires crossing the "ten barrier" — a fundamentally different operation. The child needs to understand that 8+5 = 8+2+3 = 10+3 = 13.
This strategy is called "making ten" or "bridging through ten" — it's the foundation of all future arithmetic.
The "Make Ten" strategy — step by step
Example: 8 + 6 = ?
Step 1: "How much does 8 need to reach 10?" → 2
Step 2: Split 6 into 2 + 4
Step 3: 8 + 2 = 10
Step 4: 10 + 4 = 14
At first this feels complex. After 15–20 problems, kids start doing it automatically.
5 activities to practice addition within 20
1. Ten-frame mats
Use a ten-frame (a 2×5 grid) with counters. Show 7 red counters filling part of the frame. Adding 5 more — fill the frame to 10, then add 2 more below. Visual and powerful.
2. Two-color counters
Use red/yellow counters. Put 8 red ones in a cup. "We're adding 5. Drop them in." Count: 2 yellows fill the cup to 10, 3 yellows left over. 10+3=13.
3. Number bond cards
Create cards showing number bonds to 10 (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, etc.). Practice these until automatic — they're the key to fast "bridging through 10."
4. Story problems
"Princess Lily had 9 stars. She found 7 more. How many now?"
"There were 8 unicorns in the meadow. 6 more arrived. How many altogether?"
