Dice Games for Math Practice: 12 Games for Kids

A pair of dice replaces a stack of workbooks. Twelve games cover counting, addition, subtraction and multiplication โ€” with thrill instead of pressure.

Why dice work

Dice bring randomness โ€” the source of excitement. A child solves thirty problems per round and asks for more, because it feels like play, not study. The dots on the faces also train instant quantity recognition without counting.

๐Ÿ’ก Equipment: two standard dice to start. Advanced games benefit from ten-sided dice with digits 0โ€“9 โ€” sold at board game shops.

Counting games (ages 5โ€“6)

1. Higher roll

Both players roll a die. Higher number takes the point. Ten points wins. Trains number comparison.

2. Tower

Roll a die โ€” stack that many blocks on a tower. Next roll โ€” the tower grows. Whose tower falls last. Counting plus motor skills.

3. Flash dots

Reveal a die for a second and cover it with a palm. The child names the number from memory. Trains instant quantity recognition.

Addition games (ages 6โ€“8)

4. Sum race

Roll two dice โ€” first to call the sum wins. A classic that speeds sums to 12 within weeks.

5. Race to 50

Each turn adds the roll's sum to the player's score. First to 50. Trains cumulative addition.

6. Three dice

Summing three dice means adding in two steps: 4+5=9, 9+3=12. A bridge to multi-addend sums.

Subtraction games (ages 7โ€“8)

7. Countdown race

Start at 100. Each roll's sum subtracts from the score. First to zero. Subtraction with a finish-line thrill.

8. The difference

Two dice โ€” call the difference of the larger and smaller. A 6 and a 2 โ€” answer 4. Rapid-fire subtraction.

Multiplication games (ages 8โ€“9)

9. The product

Multiply the two dice. A 4 and a 6 โ€” answer 24. The whole table to 6ร—6 in one game.

10. Speed multiply

Both players roll a die โ€” first to name the product takes the point. The thrill accelerates the table.

Logic games

11. Guess the face

One player picks a die number in secret; the other guesses using "higher-lower" hints. Three tries.

12. Build the biggest

Three rolls โ€” arrange the digits into the biggest number. A 2, 5 and 3 โ€” answer 532. Trains place value.
