First grade math covers a lot of ground. Here's exactly what's taught, when it's taught, and how you can help your child succeed without hiring a tutor.
Overview of first grade math
First grade math focuses on building a solid number foundation through addition, subtraction, place value, and measurement. By end of grade 1, children should add and subtract within 20, understand tens and ones, and solve simple word problems.
Quarter by quarter breakdown
Quarter 1 (September–October)
- Numbers to 10: counting, writing, comparing
- Addition within 10 — with objects and symbols
- Subtraction within 10
- Understanding zero
- Introduction to word problems
Quarter 2 (November–December)
- Solidifying addition and subtraction within 10
- Fact families (addition-subtraction connection)
- Introduction to numbers 11–20
- Basic geometry: shapes and their attributes
Quarter 3 (January–March)
- Numbers to 20: counting, comparing, ordering
- Addition within 20 without regrouping
- Place value: tens and ones
- Measurement: length, height, weight
Quarter 4 (April–May)
- Addition within 20 with regrouping (bridging through 10)
- Subtraction within 20
- Two-digit number concepts
- Review and preparation for Grade 2
The hardest topics in first grade math
- Bridging through 10 (8+5, 13−6) — most common stumbling block
- Word problems — many children know the math but can't identify what operation to use
- Teen numbers (11–19) — their names don't match their structure in English
💡 Parent tip: Don't rush ahead. A child who hasn't mastered addition within 10 will struggle with everything in Q3 and Q4. Solid foundations matter more than pace.
How to help at home
