How to Teach Counting to 20 in First Grade: Proven Strategies

Most children count to 10 easily โ€” then hit a wall around 13-14. There's a specific reason for this, and a specific fix. Here's what works.

Why children get stuck between 10 and 20

Numbers 1โ€“10 each have unique names. But 11โ€“19 are linguistically irregular โ€” "eleven" doesn't sound like "one-ten" even though that's what it means. Children have to memorize these as exceptions before they can see the pattern.

In contrast, languages like Mandarin use logical names: "shรญyฤซ" literally means "ten-one" (11), "shรญรจr" = ten-two (12). English-speaking children have it harder โ€” but the solution is the same: make the structure explicit.

๐Ÿ’ก Key teaching point: Show children that 14 = 10 + 4 using physical objects (a bundle of 10 sticks + 4 loose sticks). Once they see the structure, the names click into place.

Step-by-step strategies

Step 1 โ€” Solid counting to 10

Before going further, ensure counting to 10 is automatic. Ask: "Start counting from 6." "Count backwards from 10." If hesitation appears, more practice at this level is needed first.

Step 2 โ€” Introduce "ten as a unit"

Bundle 10 objects together (sticks, blocks, beans). "This is one ten." Add 1 more: "One ten and one more โ€” eleven." Add 2 more: "One ten and two more โ€” twelve." The structure becomes visible.

Step 3 โ€” Memorize the tricky ones first

Eleven and twelve are the hardest โ€” their names don't hint at their structure. Practice these explicitly through songs, stories and daily counting until automatic.

Step 4 โ€” 13-19: spot the pattern

"ThirTEEN, fourTEEN, fifTEEN..." โ€” point out the "-teen" ending means "plus ten." Once a child sees this, the rest fall into place.

Step 5 โ€” The magic of 20

"Twenty = two tens." Celebrate reaching 20! It's a significant milestone. Mark it visually on a number line or chart.
