Step-by-step guide to teaching subtraction
Step 1 — Start with "taking away" using objects
Put 8 blocks in front of your child. "Let's take away 3." They physically remove 3 blocks. "How many are left?" Count together. The physical act of removal is the concept of subtraction.
Step 2 — Use the language before the symbol
"8 take away 3 leaves 5." "8 minus 3 is 5." Say it many ways before ever writing 8−3=5. Language creates understanding; symbols capture it.
Step 3 — Connect to addition ("fact families")
Show that 3+5=8 and 8−5=3 are the same family. This is powerful: a child who knows their addition facts already knows half their subtraction facts!
