Math Olympiad Problems for Elementary Students

Olympiad math teaches thinking, not faster calculating. A tour of problem types for grades 1โ€“2 and preparation principles without overload.

How olympiad problems differ from schoolwork

A school problem drills a learned technique. An olympiad problem demands inventing the approach: the trick was never taught, the solution grows out of reasoning. That is the value โ€” thinking develops, not calculation speed.

๐Ÿ’ก Preparation principle: one or two problems a day with discussion of the reasoning. Analyzing the thought process gives more than a dozen solved problems without review.

Type 1 โ€” Sharing and splitting

Problem: How can 7 apples be shared equally between two families without cutting apples into small pieces?

Solution: 3 apples to each family, and cut the seventh in half. Each family gets 3 and a half apples.

Type 2 โ€” Weighing puzzles

Problem: Among 3 coins one is fake and lighter. How can it be found with one weighing on a balance scale?

Solution: put one coin on each pan. If one side rises โ€” that coin is fake. If the pans balance โ€” the fake is the third coin, set aside.

Type 3 โ€” Cutting shapes

Problem: Cut a square into 4 equal parts with two cuts. How many ways exist?

Solution: two cuts through the center โ€” either parallel to the sides or along the diagonals. Both give 4 equal parts.

Type 4 โ€” Patterns

Problem: Continue the row: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...

Solution: each number is the sum of the two before it. Next comes 13. The Fibonacci sequence in a child-sized version.

Type 5 โ€” Logic deduction

Problem: Three girls hold balloons: red, blue, yellow. Mia's is not red and not blue. Kate's is not blue. Who holds which?

Solution: Mia holds yellow (two colors ruled out), Kate holds red (blue ruled out, yellow taken), the third girl holds blue.

Where to find problems

Online contests for elementary grades run at Math Kangaroo, Beestar and school math circles. Problem books by Zvonkin and the Art of Problem Solving series offer age-sorted sets with solutions.
