Multiplication Tables: How to Learn Fast Without Endless Drilling
The multiplication table isn't 100 facts to memorize — it's only 36 unique ones, and half can be learned in a day. Here's the right order.
Why drilling doesn't work
The traditional approach — memorizing column by column from ×2 to ×9 — forces children to memorize 100 facts mechanically. But mathematically there are only 36 unique facts: 3×7 and 7×3 are the same thing (commutative property).
Taught in the right order with understanding as the foundation, most children master the entire table in 3–4 weeks instead of agonizing months.
The right order to learn
Step 1 — ×1 and ×10 (5 minutes)
Times 1: the number stays the same. Times 10: add a zero. That's 19 facts learned instantly — giving your child immediate confidence: "the table is easy!"
Step 2 — ×2 (1–2 days)
It's just doubling: 2×7 = 7+7 = 14. Your child already knows how to add — so they already know how to multiply by 2.
Step 3 — ×5 (1–2 days)
Answers always end in 5 or 0. Count by fives: 5, 10, 15, 20... Connect it to clocks: 5 minutes, 10 minutes — children grasp this quickly.
Step 4 — ×4 and ×9 (3–4 days)
×4 is doubling twice: 4×6 = 6+6=12, then 12+12=24. For ×9, use the finger trick: hold up 10 fingers, fold down the finger matching the multiplier — tens on the left, ones on the right.
Step 5 — Squares: 3×3, 6×6, 7×7, 8×8 (2–3 days)
Squares stick easily as "special numbers": 9, 36, 49, 64. Learn them as anchor points for everything else.
Step 6 — The remaining 6 facts (3–4 days)
After all previous steps, only 6 facts remain: 3×6, 3×7, 3×8, 6×7, 6×8, 7×8. Learn them via anchors: "6×7 is 6×6 plus one more 6, so 36+6=42."
