Number Bonds to 10: How to Teach and Master Them

Number bonds are the foundation of arithmetic. A child who knows 7 breaks into 3 and 4 adds and subtracts instantly. Here is how to build that foundation.

Why number bonds beat memorizing problems

A child who knows number bonds does not memorize problems. They understand that 7 breaks into 3 and 4, into 2 and 5, into 6 and 1. From this follows instantly: 3+4=7, 7โˆ’4=3, 7โˆ’3=4. One piece of knowledge replaces dozens of memorized facts.

๐Ÿ’ก The idea: a number bond is every pair that sums to a given number. Mastering bonds speeds up addition, subtraction, and bridging through ten.

Teaching through objects

Splitting a handful

Give a child 6 buttons. Have them split into two piles different ways: 1 and 5, 2 and 4, 3 and 3. Every split is a number bond of 6. The child discovers them by hand.

Number houses

Draw a house with 8 on the roof. Each floor has two windows. The child fills the pairs: 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 3 and 5, 4 and 4. The house collects the whole set of bonds visually.

Bonds of 10 โ€” the key to arithmetic:
1 and 9 ยท 2 and 8 ยท 3 and 7 ยท 4 and 6 ยท 5 and 5
Knowing these pairs unlocks bridging through ten.

The order to learn

  1. Bonds of 2 to 5 โ€” first stage, pairs are simple
  2. Bonds of 6 to 9 โ€” more options, needs practice
  3. Bonds of 10 โ€” a special focus, the base for numbers to 20

Games for practice

Hide in the fist

Take 7 buttons, hide some in a fist, show the rest. The child names the hidden amount. The game trains bonds through guessing.

Matching halves

Cut number cards so halves add to 10. The child finds pairs: 3 seeks 7, 4 seeks 6. Bonds of ten lock in through play.

Two-dice toss

Which two dice sum to 8? The child rolls and checks. The thrill turns bond practice into fun.
