Place Value for Kids: Tens and Ones Made Simple
The number 47 means four tens and seven ones. Grasping place value unlocks column addition, counting to 100 and everything after.
Why place value matters
The notation 47 rests on position: the 4 means tens, the 7 means ones. A child without place value reads the number as "four and seven" โ hence errors in columns, comparison and counting to 100.
Teaching through bundles
Step 1 โ Bundle the tens
The child counts out ten sticks and wraps a rubber band around them. One bundle โ one ten. Three bundles โ thirty. Bundles get counted as single units.
Step 2 โ Build numbers
The number 34: three bundles and four loose sticks. The child assembles the number by hand and names it: three tens, four ones. Then the reverse โ hearing the name, they build the set.
Step 3 โ Write by place
A chart with two columns: "tens" and "ones." The number 52 goes in: 5 into the tens column, 2 into the ones. Digit position gains meaning.
How many tens and ones in 68? (6 and 8)
Build a number from 7 tens and 3 ones (73)
Which is more: 3 tens or 25 ones? (3 tens = 30)
Place value games
The banker
Ones are penny coins, tens are dimes. The child trades ten pennies for one dime. Exchanging locks in number structure.
Biggest number wins
Roll two dice: the first gives tens, the second ones. A 4 and a 2 make 42. The bigger number takes the point.
Number riddles
"A number has 5 tens and 6 ones. Which number?" Then harder: "A number between 40 and 50 with 3 ones." Riddles train moving between notation and structure.
