Why children need puzzles
A puzzle offers no ready-made algorithm โ the child hunts for a path alone. This trains persistence, flexible thinking, and trying a different approach when the first one fails.
Tangram โ the classic for spatial thinking
What it is
Seven flat shapes: 5 triangles, a square, a parallelogram. They combine into silhouettes โ a cat, a house, a person โ with no gaps or overlaps.
How to start
Begin with a template showing internal lines within the silhouette. Then move to a silhouette with no hints about piece placement. The final level: inventing an original shape.

How to work with puzzles
- Do not solve for the child โ tolerating their being stuck is harder than helping, but that is exactly what builds thinking
- Praise the process: "You're trying different approaches โ that's the right mindset"
- Set a reasonable time โ 15-20 minutes, then a break
- Track progress โ photograph finished puzzles, count solved ones
