Temperature and Degrees for Kids: Learning to Measure
The window thermometer is the first device with negative numbers in a child life. Frost and heat turn the scale into a familiar thing.
The degree as a unit of warmth
Temperature measures in degrees; the tool is a thermometer. Scale anchors rest on experience: 0° — ice melts, +20° — a room, −10° — frost pinches cheeks. Life anchors hold the scale better than definitions.
Zero and minus — meeting negative numbers
Below zero
The thermometer is a natural doorway into negative numbers: −5° sits on the scale in plain sight. Stronger frost — a "lower" number, though the digit grows: −15 is colder than −5. The paradox untangles with a finger on the scale: down means colder.
Comparing temperatures
Scale questions: which is colder, −3 or −8? (−8 — lower on the scale). Which is warmer, 0 or −1? (0). The scale before the eyes insures against errors until the rule settles.
Temperature problems
Morning +2°, the day warmed by 6°. Daytime temperature? (+8°)
Daytime was +5°, the night cooled by 7°. Night temperature? (−2°)
Yesterday −4°, today −9°. By how much did it cool? (by 5°)
The room is +22°, outside −8°. How much warmer is the room? (by 30° — a starred problem!)

Common difficulties
- "−15 beats −5 because 15 beats 5" — a finger slides down the scale: lower means colder and smaller
