Where grade 3 fits
Third grade closes out basic arithmetic. The multiplication table reaches full automaticity, multi-digit multiplication and division appear, numbers grow to 1000. Gaps from this year follow a child into middle school — the year deserves attention.

The year's hardest topics
Division with remainders
17÷5 = 3 remainder 2. The child hunts for the nearest table fact below the dividend. Support with objects: 17 candies into bags of 5 — three bags fill, 2 candies remain.
Order of operations
The expression 20−2×5 resolves multiplication first: 20−10=10. The left-to-right mistake gives 90. Colored underlining of operations before solving locks in the rule.
Multi-step word problems
Long problems need a plan. A diagram or short note before solving is a required step. A child who draws the problem solves with twice the confidence.
