3D Shapes for Kids: Cube, Sphere, Cylinder Explained
A square can be drawn on paper; a cube cannot โ only its picture. The difference between flat and 3D shapes clicks best with objects in hand.
Flat versus 3D โ the difference
A flat shape lies flush against a sheet of paper, matching it completely โ it has only length and width. A 3D shape won't lie flat โ it also has height, "thickness." A Rubik's cube won't flatten into a square.
The main 3D shapes
Cube
Six identical square faces. An ice cube, a die, a square box. The cube is the square's 3D "relative."
Sphere
Round on every side, no corners or faces. A ball, a globe, an orange. The sphere is the circle's 3D "relative."
Cylinder
Like a soup can: two round bases and a curved side. A cup, a battery, a pipe.
Cone
A round base narrowing to a single point. An ice cream cone, a wizard's hat, a traffic cone.

Faces, edges, vertices
On a cube
Faces are flat sides (a cube has 6, all squares). Edges are the lines where faces meet (12 total). Vertices are points where edges meet (8 total). Counting together while holding a real cube is the most effective way to remember.
Playing with clay
Mold a cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone from clay. Creativity plus geometry โ 3D shapes stick through hands better than through textbook pictures.
