Division With Remainders: How to Explain to Kids

Objects don't always split evenly. Understanding this fact and finding the remainder is a key step in learning division.

When a remainder appears

Split 17 candies among 5 children evenly — each gets 3 candies, with 2 candies left over. That leftover is the remainder: what could not be split evenly.

💡 The remainder rule: the remainder is always smaller than the divisor. Dividing by 5 means the remainder ranges from 0 to 4, never 5 or more (otherwise one more full share was possible).

Deal 17 buttons one at a time into 5 boxes, going around. After the third round, each box holds 3 buttons, and 2 buttons remain — not enough for a fourth full round.

Writing division with a remainder

Notation:
17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2
Check: 5×3+2=17 — it checks out!

The algorithm for finding the remainder

Step by step

Take 23÷4. Find the nearest number divisible by 4 that does not exceed 23: that's 20 (4×5=20). Quotient: 5. Remainder: 23-20=3. Check: 4×5+3=23.

15÷7 = 2 remainder 1

Word problems with remainders

A bus has 27 seats, 4 seats per row. How many full rows and how many seats in the leftover row? (6 full rows, 3 seats in the seventh)

25 apples are packed into bags of 6. How many bags are fully packed and how many apples remain? (4 bags, 1 apple)
