Angles for Kids: Right, Acute, and Obtuse
An angle is the opening between two lines. Three types become easy to tell apart when compared to the corner of a sheet of paper.
Right angle — the comparison tool
The corner of an ordinary sheet of paper is a right angle. Hold it against any angle in a shape: matches exactly — it is a right angle; a gap on one side — it is acute or obtuse.
💡 Anchor: a rectangle corner, a table edge, a book corner — all right angles. The child compares any new angle to these.
Acute angle — smaller than right
An acute angle is "narrower" than a right angle — the opening between the lines is small. A pizza slice, a pencil tip, the clock hands at 1 o'clock are acute angles.
Obtuse angle — bigger than right
An obtuse angle is "wider" than a right angle. An open book beyond 90°, clock hands at a quarter to three — obtuse angles.
