Area of a Rectangle for Kids: How to Explain It
Area is how many squares fit inside a shape. Teaching it on grid paper makes the formula obvious instead of memorized.
Area through grid squares
Area is the space inside a shape, measured in squares: however many unit squares fit inside, that is the area. Grid paper turns the abstraction into counting.
From counting squares to the formula
Step 1 — Count the squares
A rectangle 4 by 3 squares. The child counts the little squares one by one: twelve. Area — 12 squares. First shapes get counted exactly this way.
Step 2 — Count by rows
The same rectangle: three rows of four squares. Rows count faster: 4+4+4=12. The link to multiplication appears.
Step 3 — Discover the formula
Three rows of four is 4×3. Area equals length times width: A=l×w. The formula grows out of counting rows instead of dropping from above.
A rectangle 5 by 4 cm. Area? (20 sq cm)
A square with a 6 cm side. Area? (36 sq cm)
A garden bed 3 by 7 meters. Area? (21 sq m)

- Stickers on a sheet: rows times columns

Common mistakes
- Mixing up area and perimeter — return to "fence and grass"
- Dropping square units — area is measured in squares, so the answer reads "sq cm"
- Adding sides instead of multiplying — recount the squares and see the rows
