The hundred by hand
Ten bundles
Ten bundles of ten sticks tie into one super-bundle — a hundred. The hundred stops being a word and becomes an object: here it is, in hand, made of ten tens.
Money as a model
A hundred-dollar bill — hundreds, a ten — tens, a one — ones. The number 236 assembles from bills: two hundreds, three tens, six ones. Exchanging cements the structure.

Left to right by place
The number 582 reads by floors: five hundred — eighty — two. Card practice: the adult shows a number, the child reads. Then the reverse: hearing it, writing the digits.
"Three hundred seven" — 307, not 37 and not 3007! The zero holds the empty tens place.
"Five hundred forty" — 540, zero in the ones place.
Numbers with zeros get dictated most — errors live there.
Comparing and ordering
Comparison starts at the highest place: 456 versus 462 — hundreds match, tens decide: 5 loses to 6, so 456 is smaller. The "highest place rules" principle saves recounting.
