How to Prepare a Child for a Math Olympiad

Olympiad prep is not cramming โ€” it is systematic training of non-standard thinking. Here is a one-month plan.

Week 1 โ€” Diagnose

Solve a past practice test together. Note which problem types cause trouble โ€” logic, geometry, arithmetic.

Weeks 2-3 โ€” Targeted work

Focus on the weak spots from the diagnosis. 15-20 minutes a day, 2-3 problems, with a detailed walk-through of the reasoning.

Week 4 โ€” Consolidate

One more full practice test, timed. A final check of format and speed.

FAQ

Should we prepare if the child dislikes competition?
If participating causes strong stress, do not push it. Developmental problems are valuable outside the olympiad context too.
