How to Prepare for a Math Test
Cramming the night before works worse than steady preparation. Here is a week-long plan plus techniques to lower test-day stress.
Why last-night cramming fails
Information crammed in one evening never settles into long-term memory. By the next day only fragments remain. Systematic prep over several days delivers solid results.
A week-long prep plan
5-7 days out โ diagnose
Solve a practice test or similar problems. Note what comes easily and what causes trouble. This becomes the map for the rest of prep.
3-4 days out โ work the weak spots
Focus on topics where errors happened. Do not re-cover everything โ save time for the trouble zones.
1-2 days out โ consolidate
Solve one more full practice test, timed. This drills knowledge, speed, and comfort with the test format all at once.
The night before โ light review only
No new topics. Skim formulas and rules. Go to bed on time โ sleep matters more than an extra hour of cramming.
Lowering test-day stress
- Good sleep โ 8-9 hours; a tired brain does not retain well
- A solid breakfast โ the brain needs fuel for focus
- A calm, pressure-free talk: "You prepared, you'll do fine"
- Don't threaten consequences for a bad grade right before the test
Strategy during the test
Start with easy problems that are sure wins. This eases tension and saves time for the hard ones. Save tough problems for last, but never skip them entirely.
After the test
Reviewing mistakes matters more than the grade. "What was hard? Where did time run out?" โ these questions prepare for the next test better than worrying over a number in a gradebook.
