Why strategies work
The problem 48+27 attacked head-on overloads memory. A strategy splits it into light steps: 48+2=50, then 50+25=75. Each step is simple, the answer arrives faster and cleaner. Mastering strategies takes practice, not gifts.
Strategy 1 โ Round up to a friendly number
Take 48+27. Round 48 up to 50 by taking 2 from the 27: now 50+25=75. Round numbers add without strain.
Strategy 2 โ Subtract through a round number
Take 63โ28. Subtract 30 instead of 28: 63โ30=33. Two extra were removed โ return them: 33+2=35. Rounding halves the effort.
Strategy 3 โ Split by place value
Take 34+25. Tens with tens: 30+20=50. Ones with ones: 4+5=9. Total: 50+9=59. The strategy rides on place value and scales to any numbers.
Strategy 4 โ Doubling and halving
Multiplying by 4 is double-doubling: 15ร4 = 15ร2ร2 = 30ร2 = 60. Multiplying by 5 is times ten, halved: 16ร5 = 160รท2 = 80.
Strategy 5 โ Anchor facts
7ร8 slips away โ a neighbor rescues it: 7ร7=49, plus one more 7 โ 56. Anchor facts (squares, round products) pull forgotten neighbors back.
