How to Teach a Child to Compare Fractions
Comparing fractions confuses even adults — "the bigger the bottom number, the smaller the fraction" sounds backwards. Here is the visual fix.
Same denominators — simple
2/5 and 3/5 — both split into the same number of parts (5), so compare the top numbers: 3 beats 2, so 3/5 beats 2/5. A pizza cut into 5 slices: 3 slices are more than 2.
Same numerators — trickier
1/3 versus 1/5 — which is bigger? Here the rule flips: the bigger the bottom number, the SMALLER the fraction. A third of a pizza beats a fifth — because it was split among fewer guests.
💡 A memory image: picture a cake for 3 friends and a cake for 10 friends. The slice for three is bigger! The bottom number counts the eaters.

Finding a common denominator
1/2 versus 2/5 — hard to compare directly. Convert both to a denominator of 10: 1/2=5/10, 2/5=4/10. Now it's clear: 5/10 beats 4/10, so 1/2 beats 2/5.
