Unit Fractions for Kids: Half, Third, Quarter
A unit fraction is one part out of equal parts. The notation scares; the idea opens up on an apple in five minutes — cut evenly, and the rest follows.
A fraction as an equal part
An apple cut into two equal parts — each part is a half. Into three — each becomes a third. Into four — a quarter. The fraction name grows from the number of parts. The key word is "equal": uneven pieces refuse to count as fractions.

Three identical strips. The first folds in half, the second into three parts, the third into four. Unfolded strips lie side by side: the creases show fractions visibly. A half turns out longer than a third; a third — longer than a quarter.
The fraction paradox
The bottom number grows — the fraction shrinks. Four beats two, yet a quarter loses to a half! The paradox clears up through sharing: a pie split four ways gives smaller slices than split two ways. More guests — smaller pieces.

Finding a fraction of a number
Divide by the part count
A quarter of 12 candies: 12 divides by 4 — the answer is 3. Half of 18: 18÷2=9. The rule: a fraction of a number comes from dividing by the bottom number.
A third of 15 apples? (15÷3=5)

A quarter of an hour — how many minutes? (60÷4=15)

Common mistakes
- Uneven parts — return to the equal-split rule
- "1/4 beats 1/2 because 4 beats 2" — paper strips break the illusion
- Mixing the fraction with the part count — narrate: "split into 4, took 1"
