How to Teach a Child to Count to 100
Counting to 100 builds on counting to 20 and understanding tens. Three stages — and the child names any number from 1 to 100 with confidence.
Three stages to counting to 100
Stage 1 — Round numbers
The tens row
10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100. The child learns this row as a chant. Support it with bundles of 10 sticks: one bundle — ten, two — twenty. The tens row is the backbone of all counting to 100.
Stage 2 — Numbers between tens
Twenty to thirty
After the tens row is solid, add the numbers inside: 21, 22, 23... 29. The child grasps: "twenty-one" is two tens and one unit. Then 31-39, 41-49 and so on. One decade at a time.
Tricky spots
Children mix up "fifty" and "fifteen," "sixty" and "sixteen." An emphasis on endings helps: tens end in "-ty," teens end in "-teen."
Stage 3 — Free counting
Count from any number
"Count from 47" — the child continues: 48, 49, 50, 51... Counting from a random starting point, not always from one, shows real understanding of number structure.
