How to Teach Kids to Solve Word Problems
A child calculates without errors yet freezes at a word problem โ a familiar picture. The trouble lies in reading, not counting. A four-step method fixes it.
Why word problems beat equations in difficulty
An equation hands over ready numbers and a sign. A word problem hides the operation inside a story: the text must be read, understood, translated into math. The difficulty lives in translation, not calculation.
The four-step method
Step 1 โ Read twice
First read โ meet the story. Second โ hunt for numbers and the question. The question gets underlined: the answer targets exactly it.
Step 2 โ Retell and draw
The child retells the situation in their own words and draws a diagram: circles for apples, segments for distances. The drawing converts text into a visual. This step gets skipped most often โ and it is the main one.
Step 3 โ Choose the operation
A question to the drawing: did it become more or less? Joining groups โ addition. Removing a part โ subtraction. The operation follows the picture's meaning, not keyword hunting.
Step 4 โ Solve and check
Calculate, write the answer as a full sentence, and check: plug the answer back into the story. Eight apples remain โ does the story hold up?
The keyword trap
Children latch onto words: "got more" means plus, "flew away" means minus. Reverse problems break the pattern: "Birds flew away, 3 remain, there were 8. How many flew away?" The phrase "flew away" is present, yet the solution is 8โ3 by meaning, not by keyword.
Direct: had 6 candies, got 3 more. How many now? (6+3=9)
Reverse: got 3 candies, now has 9. How many at the start? (9โ3=6)
Solving both means understanding, not pattern-matching.
The difficulty ladder
- Simple addition and subtraction stories โ one operation
- Comparison problems โ "how many more"
- Reverse problems โ the start is unknown
- Two-step problems โ a chain of steps with a diagram
Climb to the next rung after confidence on the current one. One problem a day with discussion beats five solved in a rush.
