How to Teach a Child to Round Numbers

Rounding helps estimate a result quickly. The simple "five and up rounds up" rule opens this topic in a single lesson.

Why rounding matters

An exact number is not always needed. "About 300 people in the hall" reads easier than "287 people." Rounding gives a quick estimate without losing the meaning.

💡 The rule: look at the digit right after the place you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more — round up. If less than 5 — round down, drop it.

Rounding to the nearest ten

Examples

47 → look at 7 (ones). 7≥5, so round up: 50.
32 → look at 2. 2<5, round down: 30.
65 → look at 5. 5≥5, round up: 70.

Rounding to the nearest hundred

Examples

340 → look at 4 (tens). 4<5, round down: 300.
780 → look at 8. 8≥5, round up: 800.
250 → look at 5. Round up: 300.
