Trick 1 β Always ten
The trick: think of a number. Add 5. Multiply by 2. Subtract double your number. The result is 10!
The secret: (x+5)Γ2β2x = 2x+10β2x = 10. The chosen number destroys itself β a ten remains. Works with any number.
Trick 2 β Age reader
The trick: multiply your age by 2, add 10, multiply by 5, say the result. The performer subtracts 50 and divides by 10 β the age appears!
The secret: (2x+10)Γ5 = 10x+50. The performer reverse steps recover x.
Trick 3 β The number 1089
The trick: take a three-digit number with different first and last digits, say 521. Reverse it: 125. Subtract smaller from larger: 521β125=396. Reverse the result: 693. Add: 396+693=1089. Always 1089!
The secret: place value structure guarantees the result β testing three or four numbers convinces anyone.
Trick 4 β The magic nine
The trick: think of a two-digit number. Add its digits and subtract that sum from the number. The result divides by 9 β every time!
The secret: 10a+bβ(a+b)=9a. The nine hides inside number notation itself.
Trick 5 β Birthday reader
The trick: multiply the birth month by 5, add 7, multiply by 4, add 13, multiply by 5, add the birth day. The performer subtracts 205 β month and day appear together!
The secret: the chain assembles 100Γmonth+day+205.
Trick 6 β Same answer for everyone
The trick: a group picks different numbers. Each: add 3, multiply by 2, subtract 4, divide by 2, subtract the chosen number. Everyone got one!
The secret: ((x+3)Γ2β4)Γ·2βx = x+1βx = 1.
Trick 7 β Five cards
The trick: cards headed 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. A spectator picks a number up to 31 and points at every card listing it. The performer adds the top numbers of those cards β the number is guessed.
The secret: binary code β every number builds from powers of two in exactly one way.
