Why number riddles help
A normal equation solves in one direction. A riddle forces reasoning: which digit fits the star, why others fail. Trial, hypothesis testing and number bond knowledge all get a workout — the muscles of mathematical thinking.
Level 1 — One missing digit
1) 3 + * = 8 (5)
2) * − 4 = 6 (10)

4) * + * = 10, both digits equal (5 and 5)

Level 2 — Two missing digits
6) *3 + 2* = 58 (33+25)
7) ** + 11 = 33 (22)
8) 4* − 1* = 30, equal ones digits (45−15 or any pair with matching ones)
Level 3 — Letter codes
Same letters mean same digits; different letters mean different digits.
9) A + A = 8. What is A? (4)
10) B + B + B = 9. What is B? (3)
11) Can AB + 1 = BA for neighboring digits A and B? Try pairs and see. (Checking 89+1=90 fails; testing all pairs shows no solution — proving that is the answer!)
Level 4 — Magic squares
12) A 3×3 square where rows, columns and diagonals each sum to 15. Center is 5, corners are even. Place 1 through 9. (the classic: 2-7-6 / 9-5-1 / 4-3-8)
13) A 2×2 square from 1, 2, 3, 4: equal row sums. (1+4 and 2+3)
Level 5 — Number chains
