Math Skills for Kindergarten: Complete Checklist for Parents
Wondering if your child is on track with kindergarten math? This checklist covers everything they should know — and what to do if there are gaps.
Why a checklist matters
Kindergarten math builds the foundation for everything that follows. Skills not mastered in kindergarten don't disappear — they become gaps that make first grade harder. Catching and filling gaps early is far easier than remediation later.
Kindergarten math checklist
✅ Counting
- Counts to 20 without skipping numbers
- Counts objects to 10 with one-to-one correspondence
- Says what number comes before/after any number to 10
- Counts backwards from 10 to 0
- Understands that the last number counted = total quantity
✅ Number recognition
- Recognizes written digits 0–10
- Writes digits 0–9 (may still reverse some — that's normal)
- Matches digit to quantity (sees "7," shows 7 fingers)
✅ Comparing numbers
- Identifies which group has more, fewer, or the same
- Uses words: more, less, fewer, equal, same
- Compares numbers to 10: "Is 8 more or less than 5?"
✅ Addition and subtraction foundations
- Understands "putting together" = addition
- Understands "taking away" = subtraction
- Adds small numbers to 5 using objects
- Subtracts small numbers from groups of 5 using objects
✅ Geometry and measurement
- Names circle, square, triangle, rectangle
- Sorts objects by shape, size or color
- Compares lengths: "which is longer?"
- Understands: above, below, beside, in front of, behind
What to do if there are gaps
Don't panic — kindergarten gaps are very normal and very fixable. Focus on one area at a time. Use hands-on activities and games, not worksheets. 10–15 minutes daily is more effective than long weekly sessions. And always keep the tone positive — your attitude about math shapes theirs.
