Ordinal Numbers for Kids: First, Second, Third
"Three apples" and "the third apple" are different things. Cardinal numbers count; ordinal numbers mark position in a line.
Two kinds of numbers in speech
"I have five pencils" is a cardinal number, answering "how many?" "I'm fifth in line" is an ordinal number, answering "which one?"
The "who's first" game
Lining up toys
Put 5 toys in a row. Ask: "Who's first? Who's last? Who's third?" The child physically sees each toy's spot — the ordinal number becomes tangible.
Ordinal numbers in real life
Floors, places, dates
"We live on the third floor" — ordinal. "Our building has nine floors" — cardinal. "Today is the fifth" — ordinal (calendar dates are always ordinal).
Sports competitions
"Took second place" — ordinal, shows position. "Scored two points" — cardinal, shows quantity.
"I have three brothers" (cardinal)
"I was born in March — the third month" (ordinal)
"There are seven apples in the basket" (cardinal)
"He arrived seventh" (ordinal)
Common mistakes
Children sometimes mix up the form: "five" instead of "fifth" where an ordinal is needed. Practice with concrete situations (lines, floors, race positions) locks in the difference faster than rules alone.
