How to Teach a Child to Count to 10: Step by Step
Counting to 10 is the first math skill. Four stages from "says number names" to "counts objects" โ and the child is ready for addition.
Four stages of counting to 10
Children move through counting in stages. Skipping a stage leaves a gap: the child recites numbers but does not understand what they are counting. Each stage needs its own time.
Stage 1 โ Saying the names (ages 3-4)
The child memorizes numbers as a chant: one, two, three... ten. This is not yet counting โ just a word sequence, like the alphabet. It locks in through songs, rhymes and daily repetition.
Stage 2 โ One-to-one pointing (ages 3-4)
One number per object. The child points at each object and says a number. The classic error at this stage: skipping an object or saying one number twice. It corrects itself through slow joint counting with pointing.
Stage 3 โ The last number tells the total (ages 4-5)
The final number named is the count of all objects. The child counted "one, two, three" and knows: there are three apples. Before this stage the child may start counting again when asked "how many?"
Stage 4 โ Flexible counting (age 5)
The child counts from any number: "Continue from 4: five, six..." Counts backward: "from 8 to 1." Names what comes before and after a number. This is mature counting โ the child is ready for addition.
Games for each stage
For stages 1-2
Count stairs going up, fingers at hand-washing, spoons on the table. Counting becomes a daily ritual without special lessons.
For stage 3
"Give me three blocks" โ the child counts them out. "How many cars in the garage?" โ counts and names the total. The number-quantity link locks in through action.
For stage 4
"Count from 6," "who names the number before 9," "count backward from 10 like a rocket." Backward counting and mid-sequence counting signal readiness for school math.
What not to rush
Written digits โ only after confident oral counting. Writing digits โ only after recognizing them. Addition โ only after stage 4. Forcing ahead creates gaps.
