Speed, time, distance โ the trio that scares half the class. A toy car and a table turn the formula into common sense.
Speed as distance per time unit
The definition "speed is distance covered per unit of time" sounds clunky. The child version: speed shows how far something travels in one hour. A car at 60 km/h covers 60 kilometers in an hour. In two hours โ 120. The formula grows out of common sense.

How it works
A triangle: D (distance) on top, S and T (speed and time) below. Cover the unknown โ the remaining letters show the operation. D covered โ SรT below, multiply. S covered โ D over T, divide.
The toy car game
A road on the floor
A paper road with marks every 10 cm โ "10 kilometers." A toy car drives "at 20 km/h" โ two marks per turn-hour. Questions: where is the car after 3 turns? (at mark 60). How many turns to mark 80? (four). The formula is lived by hand before any writing.
The table โ main tool
Problem conditions unfold into a table with columns: speed, time, distance. Known values go in; the unknown gets a question mark. The table organizes the mind and points to the operation.
