Age Word Problems for Kids: How to Solve Them

Why age confuses
The core trap of age problems: time flows for everyone at once. Five years pass โ both the son and the father aged. Children add years to one character and forget the other. Every error in the topic grows from there.
The timeline
Drawing age
A horizontal line โ time. Points on it โ events: "now," "in 5 years," "3 years ago." Under each point โ every character age at that moment. The timeline brings order: who was how old and when becomes visible.
Typical problems walkthrough
Type 1 โ Simple adding
Problem: Mia is 7. How old will she be in 6 years?
Solution: 7+6=13. A warm-up before the real thing.
Type 2 โ Two characters
Problem: A brother is 12, a sister is 8. How much older is the brother? How old will each be in 5 years?
Solution: difference 12โ8=4 years. In 5 years: brother 17, sister 13. The difference stays 4 โ the golden rule check.
Type 3 โ Looking back
Problem: Dad is 35, the son is 10. How old was Dad when the son was born?
Solution: the son was born 10 years ago. Dad was then 35โ10=25. The 25-year difference holds for life.
Type 4 โ Sum of ages
Problem: Two sisters together are 20. One is 4 years older. How old is each?
Solution: remove the difference: 20โ4=16, split evenly: 16รท2=8 โ the younger. The older is 8+4=12. Check: 8+12=20.
Mom is 32, the daughter is 5. How much older is Mom? (27)
Grandpa is 60, the grandson is 12. Grandpa age at the grandson birth? (48)
Two brothers sum to 15, differ by 3. Their ages? (6 and 9)
A table for hard cases
Columns: character, age now, age later. Every cell fills from the conditions. The table stops characters from vanishing when time shifts โ the classic error dissolves on its own.
The family ages game
