Simple Equations for Kids: How to Explain the Unknown
An equation is a problem with a secret: one number went into hiding. The mystery box and balance scale images turn finding the unknown into a familiar game.
The equation as a riddle
The notation x+3=7 scares with its letter. Translation into child language removes the fear: "A box hides some apples. Three more were added — now there are 7. How many hide in the box?" The child answers "four" before any algebra. An equation is a familiar riddle in new clothes.

Equality means balance
The equals sign is a scale in balance. Left pan holds x+3, right pan holds 7 — balanced. Remove 3 from the left — the scale tips. Restoring balance demands removing 3 from the right too: x=7−3=4.
The same-action rule
From the scale image grows algebra's main rule: an action on one side repeats on the other. The rule arrives through a picture, not through memorizing.
Three equation types in early grades
Unknown addend
x+3=7. The path: subtract the known addend from the sum. x=7−3=4. Check by substitution: 4+3=7 — holds.
Unknown starting amount
x−2=5. There was some amount, 2 got removed, 5 remain. Return the removed: x=5+2=7.
Unknown subtracted amount
9−x=4. From 9, enough was removed to leave 4. The removed part: x=9−4=5. The trickiest type — give it a couple of extra days.

Equation games
- Box and buttons: an adult hides part, the child computes the hidden amount
- Number riddles: "A number was picked, 4 added, 11 came out. Which number?"

Common mistakes
- Random operations — return to the box and its meaning
- Skipped checking — substituting the answer becomes the required finale
- Mixing the start and the removed part — narrate the story: "what was there, what left, what remains"
