Simple Equations for Kids: How to Explain the Unknown

An equation is a problem with a secret: one number went into hiding. The mystery box and balance scale images turn finding the unknown into a familiar game.

The equation as a riddle

The notation x+3=7 scares with its letter. Translation into child language removes the fear: "A box hides some apples. Three more were added โ€” now there are 7. How many hide in the box?" The child answers "four" before any algebra. An equation is a familiar riddle in new clothes.
