How grade 2 differs from grade 1
Grade 1 introduced numbers and basic operations within 20. Grade 2 makes a qualitative leap: numbers to 100 (and beyond), the beginning of multiplication, column addition and subtraction, and two-step word problems. The pace noticeably accelerates.

The hardest topics in grade 2
1. Regrouping (47+25)
The child must hold the "carried" ten in mind. Column methods help, along with lots of practice grounded in understanding: 47+25 = 47+20+5 = 67+5 = 72.
2. The meaning of multiplication
Children often memorize tables mechanically without understanding that 3×4 means 4+4+4. Always show multiplication through groups of objects before memorization begins.
3. Two-step word problems
"They bought 3 bags of 5 apples and ate 4. How many are left?" The child must build a chain: first 3×5=15, then 15−4=11. Teach drawing a diagram of the problem.
