Comparing Fractions and Decimals for Kids

1/2 and 0.5 are the same number written differently. Here is how to compare fractions of different forms without confusion.

Converting to a matching form

To compare 1/4 and 0.3, convert the fraction to a decimal: 1/4=0.25. Now the comparison is simple: 0.25 is smaller than 0.3.

💡 The rule: comparing is easier when both numbers are in the same form — either both fractions or both decimals.

Which is bigger?
1/2 or 0.4? (1/2=0.5, bigger)
3/4 or 0.7? (3/4=0.75, bigger)
1/5 or 0.25? (1/5=0.2, smaller)
