Estimation in Math: Why Teach Kids to Guess First
A child writes 5x7=350 and misses the error — because they cannot estimate. A rough sense of the result catches silly mistakes.
What estimation means
Estimation is a quick guess at the answer before exact calculation, using rounding. For 48×5, round to 50×5=250 — so the exact answer should land near 250, not 24 or 2400.
How to teach estimation
The before-and-after rule
Before solving a problem, ask: "About how much will this be?" After solving, compare the exact answer to the estimate — if they are wildly different, something went wrong.
Estimate: 29×4 (round to 30×4=120, exact answer 116 — close!)
Estimate: 78+95 (round to 80+100=180, exact answer 173 — close!)
The "catch the error" game
Show solved problems, some with mistakes. The child estimates and finds where the answer clearly does not match the estimate — without recalculating every problem from scratch.
