Mean (Average) for Kids: Simple Explanation
Average grade, average height, average speed — the mean shows up everywhere. Let's explain it through fair sharing.
The mean is fair sharing
Three kids have 2, 4, and 6 candies. Pool all the candies and split them evenly — everyone gets 4. That's the arithmetic mean: the sum divided by the count shows the "fair" share.
Explaining through leveling
Glasses of water
Three glasses of water: 2 cm, 4 cm, 6 cm. Pour water between glasses until the level is the same everywhere. You'll get 4 cm in each — this shows the mean visually, through leveling.
How to find the mean
Step 1 — add all the numbers
Step 2 — divide the sum by the count of numbers
Example: grades 4, 5, 3, 4. Sum: 4+5+3+4=16. Count: 4. Mean: 16÷4=4.
Where the mean shows up
- Average grade for the quarter — the mean of all grades
- Average weekly temperature — the mean of daily readings
- Average height of students in a class
- Average speed over a trip
Mean problems
Over a week, temperatures were: 18, 20, 22, 19, 21 degrees. What's the average? (18+20+22+19+21=100, 100÷5=20 degrees)
Five students got grades: 5, 4, 5, 3, 4. What's the average grade? (5+4+5+3+4=21, 21÷5=4.2)
When the mean surprises children
The mean does not have to be one of the numbers in the set. The mean of 2, 3 and 5 is 10 ÷ 3 ≈ 3.3. Let children see this on a bar model: stack the bars, then level them. A fractional answer shows that the mean is a "fair share", not a real object.
A big number can distort the mean
Yet four of the five have less than 6! One big value pulls the mean up. This is a first lesson that the average can mislead.
Find the missing number
Total = 5 × 4 = 20. Known sum = 3 + 5 + 6 = 14. Missing = 20 − 14 = 6.
This reverse problem builds real understanding: the mean times the count gives the total.

Common mistakes
- Dividing by the wrong count (number of values, not the largest number)
- Forgetting one of the numbers in the sum
- Thinking the mean is the "middle" number — that is the median, a different idea you can meet later
