Percentages for Kids: Simple Explanation With Problems

A percent is a share out of a hundred. The familiar idea of "half" and "quarter" gets a new name โ€” opening a world of discounts, banks and stats.

Percent โ€” a hundredth part

"Per cent" literally means "out of a hundred." 1% is one hundredth of the whole. 50% is half. 25% is a quarter. Familiar fractions simply get a new name.

๐Ÿ’ก Anchor percentages: 100%=whole, 50%=half, 25%=quarter, 10%=a tenth. These four points are the foundation of percent understanding.

From fractions to percentages

Translating the familiar

Half a pizza = 50% of a pizza. A quarter of the class = 25% of the class. The child already works with fractions โ€” percent just dresses up the same idea.

Finding a percent of a number

Through the tenth

10% of a number = the number divided by 10. 10% of 200 = 20. Then multiply: 30% = 10%ร—3 = 60.

Through the hundredth

1% of a number = the number divided by 100. 1% of 500 = 5. 7% = 1%ร—7 = 35.

Problems:
10% of 150? (15)
A 20% discount on a $400 item. How much saved? ($80)
30% of a class of 20 are honor students. How many? (6)
