Perimeter is the length of a shape's border. The idea comes alive through movement: an ant crawls around a rectangular table and returns to the start. The ant's path is the table's perimeter.

Calculating perimeter step by step
Step 1 — Measure the sides
Take a rectangular book. Measure with a ruler: length 20 cm, width 15 cm. In a rectangle, opposite sides are equal — four sides, two sizes.
Step 2 — Add them up
The book's perimeter: 20+15+20+15=70 cm. The child adds all four sides in a row. Formulas can wait — meaning through addition comes first.
Step 3 — Spot the pattern
After a dozen examples the child sees it: two lengths and two widths. The formula P=(a+b)×2 emerges as a discovery, not a memorized rule.
