Matchstick Puzzles for Kids With Answers

Matchstick puzzles need nothing fancier than a box of matches or craft sticks โ€” and build spatial thinking better than many toys.

Why matchsticks make a great trainer

A limited number of sticks forces non-obvious solutions. No adding an extra line โ€” work strictly with what's there. This trains planning several steps ahead.

๐Ÿ’ก Game rules: usually the task allows removing, adding, or moving a specific number of sticks. Read carefully โ€” "remove 2" and "move 2" give very different puzzles.

Simple puzzles

Puzzle 1

Remove 4 sticks so that 4 squares become 2. (Try it with craft sticks: build 4 squares in a row, remove the shared walls between them)

Puzzle 2 โ€” A wrong equation

VI = VII โˆ’ I laid out in matchsticks (Roman numerals). The equation is wrong. Move one stick to make it correct. (Answer: VII = VI + I)

Harder puzzles

Puzzle 3

Build 4 equal triangles from 6 sticks. (Hint: think in 3D โ€” a triangular pyramid, not a flat shape!)

Puzzle 4 โ€” A number equation

Lay out with sticks: 5+3=2. Move one stick to make it correct. (Options: 8-3=5 or similar, depending on how the digits are formed)
